Naxos Island

  Naxos , is an island of great archaeological importance. One of the greatest ancient civilizations flourished in Cyclades at approximately 3000BC-2000BC and has left behind a great amount of monuments you can visit in Naxos. The most recognizable landmark of Naxos is Portara, a 6th century BC marble gate on the islet of Palatia in Naxos port. It is the only remnant of a temple dedicated to Apollo.Kastro-Castle (old walled city) section, on its elevated ground overlooking the harbor, provides some of the quietest alleyways to be found in town of Naxos. It survives from the days that Naxos was an outpost of the Venetian empire. Archaeological highlights include Kouros of Melanes and Apollona's Kouros,Dimitra's temple at Sagkri and many towers at several villages as well as a Byzantine churches.

  If you really want to live the experience of local tradition, you will have to try the tasteful delicacies. Marzipans and local sweets made of all kinds of fruits. We recommend that you have a small glass of raki or citron. Have lunch or dinner at a traditional restaurant (taverna) where you can enjoy the local food and the cheese of Naxos, "Graviera", of protected designation of origin.
